Lawyers block traffic in Chennai after brutal attack on junior lawyer – Chennai News
Over 50 lawyers staged a “road roko” (block traffic) protest in Chennai’s Anna Salai Road on Thursday, protesting the brutal attack on a junior lawyer in Hosur on Wednesday. The demonstration aimed to demand stronger security measures for legal professionals.
The lawyers were protesting the incident which occurred at the Hosur Court Complex when Kannan, a junior lawyer, was approached from behind by court clerk Anand Kumar. Without warning, Kumar pulled out a sickle and launched a violent attack on Kannan. Shocking footage of the assault, filmed by bystanders, shows Kumar continuing the attack even after Kannan had fallen unconscious on the ground. No one stepped forward to intervene during the assault. Following the attack, Kumar surrendered at the court.
In response to the attack, lawyers held a flash protest, blocked traffic on Anna Salai, demanding that the authorities implement stronger security laws to protect legal professionals from such violent incidents in the future.
Police sources indicated that the motive for the assault may stem from an ongoing dispute between Kannan and Anand Kumar, related to Kumar’s wife. A complaint had been filed with the All Women Police Station in Hosur but was reportedly resolved earlier with the intervention of the local lawyers’ association.
Tamil Nadu BJP chief, K Annamalai, took to social media to condemn the incident and criticised Chief Minister MK Stalin’s handling of the state’s law enforcement.
AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan questioned the existence of a functioning police force under the current administration, accusing Chief Minister MK Stalin of incompetence.
